“I am 88 years’ old and originally from Dersim. I used to work in Sharnakh 56 years ago. I have kept every gift I have received since then. When I moved to Amed, I dedicated a whole room in my house for those gifts. This small room holds the memories of 56 years. I have received some of the gifts from the cities in the north and other parts of Turkey. Some of them were gifted by my friends and others were hand-made. There are more than 1000-1500 pieces here. Some are very valuable and others are cheap. Some are antiques and some are new. I want my wife and kids to preserve these. I do not want to make any changes here and I want everything to stay where it is now. So that whoever comes across this place will immediately say that is Khala Kadthim’s house”. ...

“I am 19 years’ old, I wear my scarf and niqab because I chose to. What people say has never stopped me because God’s affirmation is more important than anything else for me.It is true that my outfit is black and thick, and I also know that I feel the heat more than anyone else, but my faith is so strong that I take the heat in this life for the sake of hell.In the same way that people are free to wear what they want, it would make me happy if that freedom isn’t taken from me and my clothing is accepted. What makes me sad is the fact that most of the criticism I get is by people of my own gender and they are women!”. ...

“Life will present you with different paths. When I graduated from Duhok’s Chemistry science department, I worked in journalism as an independent Kurdish Yezidi woman with the Kurdish based TV channels and radios. Then life presented me with another opportunity, which was working in movies and cinema. I now work in Northern and Southern Kurdistan with an international team as an assistant fashion designer, which is a great experience for me in cinema. That is life, it doesn’t stay the same. I am yearning to work as a journalist in media again, and I will continue to work in cinema, because I truly love it”. ...

“My name is Wrya, a few years ago I decided to establish a council to protect animals. At the same time, I found out that there are many people who love animals who I have not met yet. I am now treating animals. They bring all kinds of animals to me, like: wolves, foxes, hyenas, snakes, bears, and eagles. I can proudly say that I have established a council single-handedly that works for the sector of wild animals in a scientific and experienced way.I have loved animals since I was a child. I remember back in first grade, I would spend my allowance on cake and would spread it in pieces next to the ants’ nest. It would make me really happy when I saw them drag the cake into their nest. When I grew up, I would also feed any hungry animals I would come across on the streets. I would sometimes stay with stray animals and spend time with them, because my family did not allow pets in the house”. ...

“I am 22 years old and I have come from Eastern Kurdistan to go to Sulaimani for our great Sheikh’s funeral. It was initially not in your plans to come here, but the Sheikh’s son announced and said:Let all my father’s Darvishs come and fear nothing. Hopefully nothing will happen. When we arrived at the Bashmakh border, they stopped us at the Iranian side and Iranian forces fired at us. Me and a few others were wounded, but fortunately my wound is not deep. They wanted to stop us at the KR’s border as well, but later they were very helpful”. ...

“I was the first woman to open an optical store in Qamislo after my studies. There was no woman in the field, so I knew it was necessary for me to take initiative. When I first started, there were many barriers, among them was the beginning of a crisis in Syria, where supplies that came from Damascus were either delayed or stolen by armed people.I have been able to help many people, except my mother. My mother suddenly lost her eyesight and I have not been able to do anything, there have been no solutions...

“There was a strange fear in my heart when I first started this job because we work with an invisible enemy, so we have to do the job with utmost focus and attention, you give your life for the smallest mistake. It was 2009, I had recently started in power distribution and worked at the Shahid station. We had a job at Kareza Wishk that day to fix the power cable. One of my friends, Taha, was electrocuted and lost his life. I could never forget that day. But I got used to my job with time and now I love it”. ...

“I have been making tasbih (prayer beads) for 5 years. I started with the help of my friends. I worked for a master workman for the first two years, and then I opened this place. When I first started, men would tell me you are a woman and this is a difficult job for women, it is a man’s job. I told them I enjoy it and I can make it. I said what do I lack compared to the others who can do it? So I can do it as well. I can make 3-4 tasbihs in a day now. But if the material is old or damaged, it takes a lot of time to repair it. Some of the old pieces take me 3 days to repair. There are 4 women in Turkey who make tasbih and I am one of them”. ...

“I got married in 1976. We celebrated for 5 days and 5 nights. It was like the whole world came to see our wedding. Blchasur is a village in the Komas region of Mariwan in Eastern Kurdistan, there wasnt space for a needle. Hama Mullah Darziani was our singer.People were very poor at the time. I am surprised people say things are expensive now! People had one set of clothes they celebrated and mourned in. We were poor and that did not allow us to even wear one proper pair of shoes, but we were happy and healthy. It has now been 5 years that I suffer with my leg and it has taken my peace”. ...

“My love for sports started at the age of 6. Due to the lack of sport supplies at the time, me and my friends had to make the supplies ourselves. When I was 7, the first girls’ tennis team formed in Duhok and I was fortunately able to join. I was one of the top players in Kurdistan and I participated in many local and international competitions. The path was not easy and I faced a lot of challenges, but I was proud to be a representative of my city and country for 8 years. My love for sports did not stop there and it actually grew. It grew in another area, which was hiking and travelling across Kurdistan’s beautiful mountains. I was again lucky to find a group who enjoyed hiking like me. After one year of hiking together, we became a sort of family and our home became the mountains we passed through together, whether it was under extreme heat or under the winter rain”. ...

“66 years ago, my family bought me a trumpet. They paid 250 Syrian liras for it back then. Today that amount is enough for a whole family’s cost for two months. So, I started playing since I was 10 and studied music with Hasan Turk. I was very impressed with the Qamislo Syrian brass instrument group and was interested in playing because of them.I have participated in several international festivals in Damascus, and have been awarded many appreciation and gifts during the military shows by the Syrian defense minister in my years of military service.I still continue what I have done and I am busy forming a military bass instrument group for the soldiers of the (Self-defense) forces in Rojava. We have participated in celebrations for success over the ISIS terrorist group in the region”. ...

“I have been reading for 15 years. People get addicted to drugs, I am addicted to reading. In the middle of the night, when people are in deep sleep, I am constrained with the texts in a book, in a way that I sometimes feel like I am a character in the book. There are books I have not been able to read because of the lack of time, I have thought of ripping it all out and eating it as a meal. I have been willing to go very far for the rare books. The totalitarian and fascist systems steal everything, but I have done it for the sake of knowledge and self-growth and have stolen books”. ...
