“I used to work in the municipality of Amed. I was fired in 2016. After I got fired, some of my friends and I started farming. We made our first tent here; then we built a house with adobe. We built our workshop, kitchen, and cottage and set up our solar energy. We got drilling and other energy needs entirely from solar power. This way, we can continue our self-sustainable economy. With this environmentally friendly economy, we certainly have products to sell. Our main goal is to collect, preserve and exchange local seeds. We grow fruit trees and keep animals like chickens, cats, dogs, and pigeons. We want to maintain the natural balance”. ...

“I'm not sure how old I am; I have four girls and three boys. I’m from Palangan village in Kamyaran. When my husband and I got married, we were soon able to buy a house and had livestock too. But now, my husband has fallen ill and staying with our youngest son; I’m too attached to the countryside lifestyle and cannot live in the city with them. This loneliness is difficult for me. The most unpleasant memory I have with my husband is when one of our daughters, who wasn’t even too young, got sick, and he took her to the doctor. I stayed in the village with our other children. My husband returned a few days later, and I saw he was alone. Sadly, our daughter passed away, and he buried her on the way home”. ...

“Years ago, the first stork came to our village. The villagers were so kind to it that the year after, many more storks returned with it, and this continued until their numbers neared 800 in the Zrebar area. Everyone in the village is aware of the site specified for them, and every year, before their return, we fix the nests for them. These birds have made the village a tourist destination, which is a reason for cheerfulness. Like everyone else in the village, I, too, water the trees in this area, and all the people who have farms here have given up the land for the storks”. ...

“I was in sixth grade when I started playing football and was participating in the tournaments organized by the schools. In 1980 when my father passed away, so many other responsibilities rested on my shoulders that I had to quit football for years. After finishing my military service in 1987, I returned to #Qamishli and got to know many talented youngsters, so we established a team named Joffintos together. The team consisted of 65 members, and I was one of them. In 2015 we arranged a tournament and were told that the team that would win the title will also open the new Azar 12th (March 12th) stadium and face the Amed Spor Team, which was a professional team. We won the tournament, faced Amed Spor as the Rojava team, and won against them in front of 15 thousand spectators. We received many recognitions, and later I became one of the founding members of the Sports Union of Qamishli. Everyone in my family is an athlete, and we are focusing on our youngest to have a bright future”. ...

“I can't live in a house without greenery. I have a strong relationship with plants. I had planted more than hundreds of types of flowers in my house in Afrin, but after the Turkish invasion of the area in 2018, I moved from Afrin to Qamishli with my family and lost all my plants. We have rented a house here, and now I am trying to regrow what I have lost here on my small balcony. I sit among these flowers daily and think about my home and all the things we lost”. ...

“The worst day of my life was when a mass-scale avalanche occurred, and the entireness of the village was affected by it. My daughter was seven years old and drowned with seven other people in the current. We couldn’t retrieve their body, and my girl disappeared. In the year 1384 (Solar Calendar), my husband passed away in our garden, and I was left alone. I have no one now; it’s just me and a photo of my husband”. ...

“We spent our childhood taking care of pigeons. We opened our eyes, and they were the first thing we saw. Our parents and grandparents also took care of them. This is a tradition. After me, my children will take care of them. In the past, our house was in a poor neighborhood. The roof of the house was suitable for keeping pigeons. However, that opportunity ceased after we moved to this neighborhood where wealthier people live. Despite all that, I did not give up on my pigeons and brought them to this neighborhood. We built a mobile home for them in the garden. I have been watching them like this for 15 years now. In the beginning, many people in the neighborhood reacted negatively. But once their children came to play with the pigeons, their opinion changed, and they loved them too. I give them water in the mornings and also in the evenings. I fly them. In my opinion, the most beautiful thing to watch is pigeons flying”. ...

“There are people living on the street. They stay there, not having money, and they’re usually hungry. When they pass by the factory, they look inside. I know they are hungry but are ashamed to ask. That’s why I wrote on my window, “If you are hungry and have no money, don't be hesitant.” So, this way, pay if you want to take some, but even if you do not, it’ll be halal for you to take. No matter how much they say humanity is dead, we still write that we have hope. It is a year since I have written this. After writing it, many people come to eat and drink for free. Some people pay later, but some cannot. It is all halal. This is also a blessing for me. At least 30 toasts a day are consumed like this. Not everything is money. We are also in need of humanity”. ...

“I spent half of my life in war and on the front lines. During my time, military service was mandatory. I have memories from all of the provinces in Iraq. People my age remember how we had to prepare ourselves for each war after one another. We are used to war; thus, unfortunately, we could never have an ordinary life. So many times, I have cried about being away from Kirkuk; sadly, nothing is how it used to be now. Maybe it is because how life has exhausted us has left a deep wound in our hearts. When I was younger, I didn’t have time to enjoy this city and its times, and now there is much time, but I’ve gotten old”. ...

“I’m 62 years old and from Kani Maran village. I’ve been a cowherd for a long time. I wake up every day at 3:00 AM, eat my breakfast, take the buffalos to the plains, and stay there for about 12 hours. Buffalos prefer being in the water, but because of drought, many of the oasis and springs dried out, except for 1-2 locations left. This is causing people to sell their buffalos; if it continues like this, I’ll be jobless too, and a family of seven depends on this work; we’re barely making a living. When my house caught fire, the village people helped and collected money for me.Buffalo’s yogurt has a substantial demand because it is rich in fats and doesn’t expire. It is sold in markets fast; sometimes, people even get in the queue for it." ...

“After freeing Rojava from ISIS, they tried to take revenge by starving the people. They did that by burning our farms and crops for the last two years. In 2019, crop production declined, and big fires spread out. Therefore, as women, my friends and I decided to protect the farmlands that are on the main roads. We cooperated with the fire department, so we call them whenever we spot fire; this way, we will also be protected. Even though I have children now and am a housewife, I still do my duty and serve my nation. Our area is famous for crop growing, and we will protect it”. ...

“I’m 70 years old, and I’ve been working on collecting photos and antique pieces for 11 years now. This is my favorite hobby, some of them I’ve bought for high prices, and others were gifted to me. The photos date back to a long time ago up until now. People have asked me many times to sell the place, but these are history and not for sale. I come here every day and feel joyful. The only thing that I fear the most is this place catching fire. I have told my wife that she should take my place here after my death. I spent a lot of money here, and I’m pleased. People use their money for other things; I want to serve the city of Sulaymaniyah”. ...
